How Hard is it to Write an Ebook?

by Joseph Atkinson on 2010/03/10

Would you like to try and write an ebook? If so, what is stopping you? If you have always thought it was too complicated, think again. You don't need to learn complicated programs or have excellent writing skills. What you need are desire, effort, and a belief in yourself.

Prior to anything else is the necessity of having the software that can create an ebook. You can locate many of these online at no cost. Perhaps the most popular of these programs can be downloaded from the Open Office website. It's easy to install and comes with an extensive help file.

As with any large project, writing is much easier when broken down into small bits. If you have a plan to follow, any fear you may have about the actual writing process can be overcome. It is a mistake to try and begin a book without a definite goal to aim for.

A good initial step is to determine the reason why you wish to write an ebook. Will you be trying to earn a profit from it or will you be using it as a promotional tool? No matter what your reasons may be, keep in mind that it is always easier to write on topics that interest you and that you have knowledge of.

The next thing you should do is to try to think of a few titles for your new book. This can help you focus on what you wish to write about. You don't even have to use any of these titles for your finished product. The mere act of writing them down can make you feel as if you are accomplishing something.

You can begin to write the actual book itself at this point. Just be yourself, and write as you would to a friend or relative. It is not necessary to get everything absolutely perfect the first time through. There will be plenty of time for proofreading later on, and constantly stopping to check your spelling will just slow you down.

Large sections of your book may need to be rewritten or modified several times before it's complete. This shouldn't worry you, because the format of an ebook makes it really easy to revise. You can cut or rearrange whole chapters with just a few mouse clicks.

After the completion of your book, you will want to consider how it will appear on a computer screen. Ebooks are usually read in this way instead of being printed. Therefore, make the font and line spacing a little larger than average.

Don't be disheartened if you write an ebook and it doesn't sell particularly well. The important thing to remember is that you will have done something that a lot of people are afraid to try. Furthermore, it's just possible that your next book will make you a well known author. You'll never know if you don't try.
