Ballet Shoes movie was already popular before it even hit the theaters. After all it is Emma Watson's first post - Potter project. The film directed by Sandra Goldbacher is based on a children's classic by Noel Streatfield. The amazing thing about the movie is how well the director has adapted the classic into a world class movie that is not just a children's film anymore but an intelligent drama set in the 1930s'.
The film, set in London, tells a thrilling tale of three orphans who goes by the name of Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil. These girls are adopted by a bizarre traveler, Gum, who deposits them with his selfless niece (Emilia Fox) and leaves for a trek. The film revolves around the struggles made by each girl to fulfill their dreams. Pauline is keen to become an actress; Petrova wants to be flyer when she grows up while Posy believes that she is destined to become a danseuse, given a chance.
The family is seen cash strapped and they live in abject poverty. There are lots of financial strains on the girls and they begin to feel exhausted, both emotionally and physically. Very soon they realized that there are obstacles galore between aspirations and reality.
The tenants were Mr. Simpson, the garage owner, Drs Jake and Smith, the retired professors and Theo Dane the professional dancer. The girls were lovely people who struggled with Sylvia to save their home and at the same time pursue their ambitions in life. Mr. Simpson had a tragic past and a keen interest in cars. Drs Jake and Smith help the girls with lessons. Theo helps them by admitting the three girls in the dance school where she is a teacher. The three girls take to stage to raise the required money. Ultimately the three girls find their true talents - Pauline is an actress, Petrova fixes engines and Posy becomes a dancer.
The film is a charming flick with a beautiful screenplay by Heidi Thomas. The film has a happy ending but is free from any clichs or unnecessary mushiness that is very prevalent in such family dramas.
Emma Watson managed to get out of the character of Hermione and plays the character of Pauline brilliantly. Lucy Boynton who plays the role of Posy Fossil is perfect with her dialogue delivery and does the comic scenes with ease. Yasmin Paige as the third sister executed her role well and she along with Lucy are definite stars of tomorrow.
Ballet Shoes is a clean movie and can be enjoyed the whole family. However, it is a real pity that the film was never released in theaters nor shown on HBO. But you need not despair. You can always watch Ballet Shoes online free without any hassles. It will be sin to miss out on this wonderful movie.
