Reading For A New Era: Ebook Reading Device

by Chris Frost on 2009/12/31

Reading has gotten an upgrade in the last few years, and it's no surprise, what with digital cameras, digital picture frames, and of course, digital music. The next big thing is here: The ebook reading device.

First the Kindle from Amazon made it's debut, and then Sony released it's own. Barnes and Noble, and Borders are also in the race with their very own reading devices. There are even applications for certain MP3 players that allow it to behave like a reading device. With all of the hype and focus on E-books, you have to wonder where it is leading, and why it is becoming such a trend.

The debates about the pros and cons of the ebook from a readers' points of view is continuous, and often heated. So like the compact size of the ebook reading device, and the fact that they can easily carry more than just a few books at a time without the burden of hard covers causing extra charges on a flight due to weight issues.

The cons, some say, outweigh the pros. Those against the E-reading craze worry that the ebook and the device that goes with them will wipe out the printed word. Other worries and dislike for the device are more practical. Battery length, the bulkiness of the device, and not having the same intimate feel that a printed book gives them.

From an author's point of view, the ebook phenomenon can be considered just another marketing strategy. Authors can use reading devices to promote their books by offering samples of the work for free so that potential readers can decide whether they want the full book or not. This is how some authors get their sales: by having their work accessible. What a wonderful way to get the word out about up and coming authors too!

The book printing industry has taken the rise of ebooks and met the challenge head on. Many now offer their titles as both print books and ebooks. They see it as potential to further their earnings.

Not matter what side you take, the ebook reading device is on the rise. At this rate, we may see an increase in ebooks in the next few years. What will they come up with next?
